Cornerstone Landing is a community-based, non-profit, registered charitable organization that was developed to assist youth that are on the verge of homelessness or who find themselves homeless. Inititally, we guide these youth to community organizations such as Open Doors ( a local counselling service), Ontario Works, or Lanark County Mental Health and then we provide them with the emotional support, rent supplements and/or gift certificates enabling them to obtain independant living. These youth live in Lanark County, are between the ages of 16 and 24 and are still in school and working towards their highschool diploma.
As Child Youth Worker at Perth & District Collegiate Institute I work with at risk youth on a daily basis. There are times that a student will come to me and say that they are nto able to live at home at this point. The reasons vary, but 9 time out of 10 it is because there is soemthing going on at home that prevent them from being there. If left on their own these students become very vulnerable to the dangers of 'couch-surfing' (physical/sexual abuse and possible drug addiction), or the harsh reality of being forced to live on the streets. At Cornerstone Landing we believe that these at risk youth deserve a hand-up in order to become productive adults.
Cornerstone Landing was started about five years ago and I am happy to say that we are currently financially supporting 6 youth in our area. Two of our youth are currently receiving rent supplements of $200.00 a month and the other four are receiving $50.00 in gift certificates a week. We have also seen one of our clients graduate from high school and she is looking forward to going to college in the fall. One thing is for sure, we could not do what we do without all the amazing support from our community,
